Santorini Lava Rock - History & Properties

History and Properties

Thera (Santorini) volcano, one of the most famous volcanoes in world history, destroyed the Minoan civilization by erupting in 1600 B.C.

It has taken thousands of volcanic eruptions for the island of Santorini to be formed. In the last 400.000 years, the Santorini volcano had erupted over 100 times. Before the last big eruption, occurred in 1600 B.C, the Island was called “Strongili” meaning, “round”, as the shape of the island was round and not crescent, as it actually is due to the big eruption of 1600 B.C.

Santorini magma (lava) has been used from ancient times in the creation of jewels. The center of its treatment and trade was the city of Mochlos. There is evidence that the jewelry workshops of Mochlos made exceptional jewels.

Traditionally, lava rock is believed to have healing properties and keep people warm in cold climates; by its journey straight from Earth’s core it is also associated with spirituality and universality.
